I am sure all of you have heard of the term Remy. It is a well known term used in the hair extension industry with various definitions attached to it. Whether or not hair extensions are Remy hair, will have a great impact on the quality and lifespan of the hair. This is why it is important to know the facts when it comes to remy and non-remy hair.

Remy Hair extensions in its true form refers to the way that the hair is handled and processed. This means that the hair is collected in a ponytail and kept in a root-tip direction throughout production. This ensures that the cuticles remain aligned in the same direction from top to bottom, keeping the hair soft and tangle free. Cuticles protect the hair, locks in moisture and ensures a healthy look and feel.

Non-Remy hair refers to hair that has not been collected in a single pony, but rather hair that has been collected from multiple sources and bundled together. This way of sourcing can not guarantee that all the cuticles remain aligned and facing in the same direction. When dealing with non-remy hair, the hair itself will not feel as soft as true remy hair due to friction caused by cuticles facing opposite directions. The hair will have resistance when you pull your fingers through the hair and will be resistant to brushing when wet.

Non-Remy hair is usually stripped of its cuticles with the use of an acid-bath. During this process, the cuticles are removed from the hair to reduce matting and tangling. Following the procedure, the hair is coated with a polymer (silicone) and cured to give the hair a soft and shiny appearance. If the cuticles are not removed properly, the hair will matt and tangle during the first week of wear. This coat usually washes of within the first week, leaving you with unmanageable, dry hair extensions.

True Remy Hair is the only choice when it comes to quality hair extension, because this ensures longevity and enables you to style your extensions as you would your natural hair. The goal of hair extensions is to make you feel beautiful and look natural. Be wary of suppliers selling “Remy” hair at cheap prices and remember that you get what you pay for. Hair extensions is an investment, so do not treat it as a final clearance sale.
